Coton de Tulear Von Willebrand's Clinic and Study

August 2013

The American Coton Club is sponsoring a Von Willebrand's Clinic through VetGen for the Coton de Tulear breed. Von Willebrand's disease (vWD) is characterized by the abnormally low production of a protein found in the blood called Von Willebrand's factor which plays a key role in the complex process of clotting a damaged blood vessel.

Background

Recently several Cotons were tested for Von Willebrand's disease and a few new carriers were identified that were not directly related to the bloodlines that were discovered to have carriers of vWD in 2006. ACC is sponsoring a study to determine the prevalence of this disease in the Coton de Tulear breed.

Statistical Data

VetGen provided the following statistics which shows the data on DNA tested Cotons since the original testing 7 years ago.

Date of Results Number Tested Clear Carrier Affected
July 2013 116 78% 16% 5%
December 2006 61 82% 13% 5%

Clinic

The American Coton Club is sponsoring a Von Willebrand's clinic through VetGen. ACC can offer the VetGen Von Willebrand's (vWD) DNA test to Coton breeders for the reduced cost of $78.50. Tests ordered individually from VetGen are $95.00 making the ACC clinic price a good value for all Coton de Tulear breeders. The test is a simple DNA cheek swab test that does not require a veterinarian visit. To receive the discounted rate, kits have to be ordered through ACC. You may order as many kits as you like for the discounted rate until August 22, 2013. Please include the address that you would like the kits sent to. The kits are also available to European breeders for the same price.

Study

The entire order will be placed together to ensure the kits are in sequential order. VetGen will mail the kits to each person that placed an order. It will be important for the tests to be completed and sent back to VetGen in a timely manner. Once all the tests have been run VetGen will be able to provide the general statistical results to ACC which would then be released to the public. Individual results will only be given to the breeders themselves and will not be given to ACC. Results remain confidential between the breeder and VetGen. It will be up to each breeder whether they wish to reveal their results publicly or not.

Outcome

The results of the study will give us a better idea of the prevalence of the disease in the Coton de Tulear breed. This will allow Coton de Tulear breeders to make informed breeding decisions. We hope the statistical results will open a dialog among breeders and clubs to help determine the best course of action to prevent an increase of vWD's disease within the Coton de Tulear breed.

ACC encourages breeders to take this opportunity to test their breeding Cotons. This disease is in its mildest form in the Coton breed which means that a breeder could have a carrier or affected Coton without realizing it. If you are unable to test all of your Cotons ACC is advising breeders to begin by testing your stud males.
